PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland erased any lingering disappointment about last weekends loss to Seattle by soundly beating the Sounders this weekend. The Timbers scored four goals in the first half Sunday then held off their Cascadia rival 4-2, snapping the Sounders five-game unbeaten streak. After the Seattle game we all hurt, said Steven Taylor, who had his first goal for Portland in the victory. All week was tough.Vytautas Andriuskevicius, Fanendo Adi, Lucas Melano and Taylor all scored for the defending MLS Cup champion Timbers (9-10-8). They remained in sixth place in the Western Conference.Jordan Morris scored for the Sounders (9-13-4). They beat the Timbers 3-1 last Sunday in Seattle but then had a mid-week match at Houston that ended with a 1-all draw.Seattle forward Clint Dempsey missed the game because of medical tests for an irregular heartbeat. Dempsey also was unavailable for the U.S. national teams upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.I will accept the blame for the first half. Its my job to make sure the team is prepared, and obviously that didnt happen, Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said.It was the third meeting this season between the Cascadia Cup rivals. Fans of the two teams, along with supporters of the Vancouver Whitecaps, created the Cascadia Cup in 2004 for the winner of the three-way contest based on points each season.Portland won the first meeting with Seattle last month 3-1 and now lead the season series 2-1.Andriuskevicius scored on a header off a corner kick for the Timbers in the 16th minute. Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei punched it up into the crossbar and it fell just inside the goal line.Just some four minutes later Adi scored to make it 2-0. Frei saved a shot by Diego Valeri but the ball landed in front of Adi, who fed it into the goal behind the fallen keeper. It was Adis 13th goal of the season.Melano scored off Diego Charas cross in the 29th minute, before Steven Taylors header off a free kick in the 43rd to give the Timbers a 4-0 lead going into the break.Seattle narrowed it when Andreas Ivanschitzs shot deflected off a Portland defender and past goalkeeper Jake Gleeson in the 47th minute. Morris scored some four minutes later with a header and the Sounders gained some momentum.I think it was the best performance of the year, Valeri said. We knew that theyd played on Wednesday against Houston, they traveled, so we took advantage of that, and we did it well, with a good performance. We scored four goals, and it could have been more goals, too. The Timbers visit first-place Dallas next Sunday, still looking for their first road win. The Sounders visit San Jose on Sept. 10.Seattle, in eighth place in the conference standings, could have been helped by Dempsey, who is tied for the team lead with eight goals. When you have one less attacker like that on the field, it always makes it a little bit tougher, Morris aid. We were gelling, I thought, with Clint in the lineup, so its tough. But, obviously, his health comes first and we hope Clints good with that.Seattle general manager Garth Lagerwey said Friday that Dempseys irregular heartbeat is something the team has been monitoring during the season and the club is now waiting on the recommendations of doctors on how to proceed.Clint has given a great service to this club and we owe him an equal measure of respect and support as we go through this medical evaluation, Lagerwey said.As a result, Dempsey was left off the U.S. national team roster for a pair of upcoming World Cup qualifying matches. The Americans visit St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Friday then hosts Trinidad and Tobago in Jacksonville, Florida, on Sept. 6.But the Sounders have a representative on the team in 21-year-old Morris, who was named to the roster after missing out on the Copa America team.Portland midfielder Darlington Nagbe also made the team announced by Jurgen Klinsmann. Nagbe has eight previous appearances with the national team. The United States is second to Trinidad and Tobago in Group C. The top two teams advance to the six-nation CONCACAF finals, from which three automatically make the field for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. If the U.S. wins on Friday and Trinidad beats Guatemala that day, the Americans will move on with one match left. Essex 204 for 3 (Bopara 81*, Zaidi 54*) beat Kent 154 for 9 (Blake 37, Walter 3-26) by 50 runsScorecard Ravi Bopara underlined his liking for the Kent attack when he hammered six sixes in an unbeaten 81 to lead Essex to their third successive NatWest T20 Blast victory. The Essex captain, who also posted 74 not out when the two teams met in the Royal London Cup two-and-a-half weeks ago, was on fire, and was particularly harsh on Mitch Claydon, who he deposited for two maximums in the final over of the innings.Bopara, who batted for 43 balls with six fours as well as those half-a-dozen sixes, put on an unbeaten 131 off 10.2 overs with Ashar Zaidi, who was in similar form himself. Zaidi finished unbeaten on 54 off 33 balls with five fours and three sixes. And all this after Kent put Essex in and Jesse Ryder went third ball, beaten for pace by Kagiso Rabada and edging to wicketkeeper Sam Billings without scoring.Kent started their reply in brisk fashion, landing a succession of sixes themselves, eight in the final analysis, but they became becalmed mid-innings as the required run-rate topped 14 with seven overs remaining and kept growing. After the departure of Ryder, the Essex innings was sparked into action by Tom Westley and Kishen Velani. Westley drove Rabada through the covers two balls into his innings and pulled another boundary through midwicket when the young South African dropped one short.Velani was no less punishing, twice giving himself room to chop Claydon through the covers and then greeting Ivan Thomas with a controlled, lofted edge to third man for another four. The second-wicket partnership had put on 42 in 4.5 overs when the pair collided midwicket chasing a second run and Velani failed to beat Sam Northeasts throw into the wicketkeepers gloves.Bopara had just deposited James Tredwell over cow corner for six when, two balls later, the bowler held a sharp caught-and-bowled to dismiss Westley for 33 from 31 balls.Boparas second six, swept over midwicket, ruined Fabian Cowdreys figures. The spinners first three overs had gone for 13, but his last went for 14.Zaidi was in typically hard-hitting mode, bouncing down the wicket to thump Thomas over cow for six and then lofting Tredwell over long leg for a second.Bopara and Zaidi passed fifty in five overs toogether when Bopara got an inside-edge for four that left Thomas flat on the floor in his follow-through, and hitting the ground in frustration.ddddddddddddIt didnt not get any better for Thomas as Bopara hit the last two balls of his spell for a straight, flat six and then paddled a four to reach his personal fifty off 32 balls.Boparas fourth six, clouting Rabada over his head high into the black sightscreen behind the bowler, also brought up the hundred partnership for the fourth wicket inside 10 overs.Zaidi reached his fifty off 33 balls from a loose full-toss by Claydon which was sent towering over midwicket. The bowler received similar treatment by Bopara who hit his fifth and sixth sixes off the same over, the first straight, the second over long-on.The home crowd, already pumped up by the display of six-hitting by Bopara and Zaidi, were soon celebrating a wicket. Joe Denly departed for a first-ball duck when he was beaten all ends up to provide Paul Walter with his first senior wicket for Essex. But Kent were soon hitting sixes for fun themselves. Dan Lawrence went for two in an over, Tom Latham hooking the first over midwicket and another straight. Sam Northeast then eased Matt Quinn over cow corner as Kent reached 49 off the first five overs. But from the first ball of the next over, Northeast swished at Graham Napier and was caught behind. Since Napier had taken two Surrey wickets with his last two deliveries at The Oval on Saturday, it meant he had taken a hat-trick, albeit six days apart. More importantly he put the brakes on Kents onslaught, conceding just two runs in the over, and then had Latham caught by Ryder backward of square.Billings did not last much longer, run out by a direct hit from Ryder in the middle of a maiden over from Ryan ten Doeschate. Stevens also fell to another direct-hit run-out as Bopara fielded off his own bowling before Alex Blake was caught by ten Doeschate on his knees at long-on for a 31-ball 37, including two sixes.Rabada went second ball to a catch behind off Quinn, Cowdrey was caught-and-bowled by Walter and Tredwell became Walters third victim, caught on the fine-leg boundary by Lawrence.
