Friday night in Vancouver, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame announced its 2015 class, headlined by quarterback Dave Dickenson, Montreal owner Robert Wetenhall, and former CFL coach and GM Bob O’Billovich among others. They are all people who are deserving of the highest honour for their place in the three-down game. But it’s time for the Canadian Football Hall of Fame to broaden its scope and reflect the true breadth of Canadian Football greatness. That’s right, it’s time to include for consideration those Canadians who make their names in the National Football League. Historically this was never a problem for the Hall of Fame in Canada since there were virtually no Canadian players in the NFL for a very long time. That, however, began to change during the 1980s to the point where, on average, there are between 15 and 20 Canadians playing during any NFL season, many of them players who spent their college years in Canada. Not every Canadian who spends a few years in the NFL is a Hall of Famer. And no one wants to see the Canadian Hall cheapened that way. But there are some examples of players who represent some of the very best football talent this country has ever produced who are not eligible for consideration to the Canadian Hall of Fame. For ten seasons, Israel Idonije was arguably the best Canadian defensive lineman on the planet, and for many years the best Canadian football player – period. He played high school football in Brandon, university football at the University of Manitoba and was a high CFL draft pick who found his way to the NFL. It is ridiculous that he cannot be considered for the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. Similarly, skill positon players such as receiver Jerome Pathon and running back Reuben Mayes deserve consideration, especially if one considers their body of work in the NCAA and NFL. Former University of Western Ontario running back Tim Tindale is another sure-fire Hall of Famer, if you put his CIS and NFL years together and measure his overall body of work. Hall of Fame executive director Mark DeNobile said this week its a conversation his group needs to start having. And hes right. There was much talk last week about how the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, located near downtown Hamilton, has fallen on hard times, with just a trickle of visitors each day. It may be time to think of a new location – Saskatchewan anyone? But it would also be smart to re-think how you measure a Canadian Football Hall of Famer. Its great to honour Americans who play three-down football in Canada. But just as the Pro Football Hall of Fame is really just the NFL Hall of Fame, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame is currently the Hall of Fame for three-down football. Now is the time to make the Hall of Fame more relevant by celebrating all of the best players in the Canadian game as well as the best players being produced in Canada. The rest of the team was already on the field stretching before batting practice while Puig was getting dressed in the clubhouse. He had been slated to start in right field for the afternoon game against the San Francisco Giants, who beat the Dodgers 8-4. "Im sincerely sorry," Puig said through a translator after the game, explaining that he didnt realize stretching and batting practice would be held so early with a 1 p.m. start. Puig said he apologized to manager Don Mattingly and his teammates, and they accepted. "They felt it was OK when I owned up to it and apologized," he said. "I felt bad I wasnt out there playing for all the fans." Instead, Matt Kemp replaced Puig in the lineup after manager Don Mattingly had earlier said Kemp wouldnt start. Kemp came off the disabled list on Friday after rehabilitating from left ankle and shoulder operations. He was limited to 279 games during the last two seasons because of injuries. Puig, last years runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year, was 5 for 20 through his first five games of the season. He wasnt used as a pinch-hitter because Mattingly said the situation didnt call for it. The Dodgers trailed 8-0 after two innings. Mattingly downplayed Puigs mistake. "He truly felt bad," the manager said. "You can tell by his body language; he doesnt hide things well." Mattingly said he thought not allowing Puig to plaay was more fitting punishment than fining him a couple hundred dollars.dddddddddddd "He felt bad he wasnt here and I believe that," Mattingly said. "Hes a good kid. Does he have to grow up and get better? Yeah, but theres a lot of guys like that." It was the latest in a series of frustrations for the team involving Puig. Last week, Mattingly called a team meeting after the 23-year-old Cuban defector made two mistakes on the basepaths during the Dodgers opening two-game trip to Australia. The dynamic right fielder became an instant sensation last year when he made his big league debut in early June and helped lead the Dodgers from last to the NL West title. But Mattingly often was frustrated by Puigs decision-making in the field and on the bases. Puig twice was arrested for reckless driving last year, when his effort on the field also came into question at times. He went 5 for 22 (.227) with 10 strikeouts and committed defensive miscues against St. Louis in the NL championship series. He remains a fan favourite, but the Dodgers want to see Puig grow up, be consistent and show better judgment on and off the field. Catcher A.J. Ellis chalked Puigs mistake up to something that can happen to any player in the mix of day and night games. "Its one of these learning experiences," Ellis said. "Hes going to be fine. Im sure hell be very prompt and on time for the rest of his career, hopefully." Saturdays game against the Giants also starts at 1 p.m. "Ill be here early," Puig said.
