This is the seventh straight year that the number of entries has increased -- there was a seven-year low of 328 entries in 2009 when the one-name handicapper known as Fezzik won the second of his back-to-back titles. SuperContestants pay $1,500 to enter and make five ATS picks a week on NFL games.Westgate collected $2,781,000 in entry fees, and the prize pool will be $2,558,520 after the takeout with the champion, who wins 35 percent of the prize pool, taking home $895,482. This falls short of last year when there were 1,727 entries for a prize pool of $2,590,500 and a Denver-area man using the alias rounding again won $906,675.The SuperContest pays out to the top 50 finishers, plus the Westgate increased the bonus for exceeding 67 percent winners from $15,000 to $20,000 and offering the same to the winner of its mini-contest over the last three weeks of the season for those that signed up by the early-bird deadline on Labor Day.In the first weekend of the NFL season, 78 SuperContestants went a perfect 5-0 to share the early lead while another 352 went 4-1. Formerly an invitational open to public handicappers and media members, the Golden Nugget opened the field to the public last year, drawing 87 entrants. This year there are 96.There were a lot of people expecting the Friday Football Showdown, which has a higher price-point at $2,000, to have a bigger increase as it still pays back 100 percent of entry fees to players, but not enough people made the switch.
